Using the Daily Cleansing & Detox Tea:
The tea blend is packaged in convenient weekly batches. To prepare the tea you empty the contents of the package into 1 & 1/2 quarts (48 ounces) of water. Bring the water to a boil and then reduce the heat to low and let the tea simmer for 6-8 hours. After it has finished brewing you then will have approximately 1 quart of concentrated tea. Then strain the tea into a container and keep it in the refrigerator where it should be stored.

When cooled the straight tea blends into a delicious licorice & peppermint taste which is mildly sweet and slightly bitter that many report grows on you and often come to love it. The bitter quality of some of the herbs used in the tea is an important part of the cleansing and health promoting qualities of the blend. Bitters have fantastic tonic and health promoting effects and are yet another wonderful gift of nature. To avoid the bitter taste the tea can simply be added to water or your favorite juice. You will still get the cleansing benefits of the tea. Because bitter herbs are such an important part of cleansing and detoxification we have include a discussion about bitters in the column to the right.

Most people get good results with 2-4 tablespoons per day. We recommend that you start by taking 1-2 tablespoons a day and see how your system responds then adjust the amount according to how much cleansing/detox effects you desire. As you gain experience in using the tea you will be able to determine how much you need to take to have the cleansing effect you want to achieve. After becoming  familiar with the tea many people find themselves simply taking a swig out of the container stored in the refrigerator from time to time as their body requires.

Some like to include the tea as a regular part of their health program and take it on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule. It is also fine to take it on a sporadic schedule or as you feel your body and digestion requires. We are often our own best guides in deciding what our bodies need if we tune in and feel what helps us to be healthy.

Occasionally when we endeavor to cleans our system we will feel worse for a little while as our bodies work to eliminate toxins. This is referred to as a cleansing crisis and normally passes as you continue cleansing and working on improving the quality of the foods you eat.

The tea will also often increase the frequency of your bowel movements. It also acts as a bowel softener which is a natural part of cleansing. If your bowel movements become too frequent or to loose you can simply reduce the amount you are taking or stop for a day or two.
As is true with any effort to improve and maintain our health, eating good foods like fruits, vegetables, salads and other whole foods, drinking plenty of water, exercise, emotional and mental balance are all important parts of building and maintaining health and will support the cleansing process. It does take effort and often changes in habits, but is well worth it and can be a lot fun to discover new things that help you feel healthy and more alive as you go about your daily life.

We hope that the Daily Cleansing and Detox Tea proves to be a helpful tool in your overall health and vitality.

About Bitter Herbs

Some of our wild foods have very strong flavors that most people with ‘soft palates’ are unaccustomed to. Our domesticated vegetables have their roots in wild ancestors, but the intense, bitter flavors have been carefully bred out of them, yielding mild, sweet-tasting vegetables.

“Bitter” is an unwelcome quality in today’s cuisine, as most people much prefer sweet or salty foods. In fact, most people are addicted to sugar from a young age and don't appreciate the taste of bitter at all. If you are trying to introduce someone to the virtues of wild foods, the bitter herbs will be a hard sell indeed. Appreciation for the quality of bitterness is an acquired taste and the sign of a ‘mature palate’ in some circles.

The four basic taste qualities are Sweet, Sour, Salty and Bitter.

We tend to think of the four food groups being meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables, and grains, but some herbal traditions categorize foods in a different way: by taste. The four major taste groups are sweet, salty, sour and bitter. In these traditions a ‘balanced diet’ would consist of a sampling of each of these. In a typical diet today we see a huge emphasis on sweet and salty, some tolerance for sour, but not bitter. In fact, food scientists are working hard at developing ways to eliminate bitter tastes entirely!

Sour and Bitter Foods Protect Against Diseases
Bitter May Be Better
So Why Bitter?

The question to be asked is “Why are some of the most densely nutritious edible herbs so bitter? What law of nature is this?”

Answer: The body needs the taste of bitter to stimulate various metabolic processes associated with the liver and digestion.

The Medicinal Action of Bitter Herbs

In herbal medicine there is actually a class of herbs called ‘bitters’. Here are some of the actions of bitter herbs on the body:

* Bitters stimulate the appetite by triggering receptor sites on the tongue, which are taste buds that are designed especially to receive bitter flavors.

* Bitters stimulate the gastric mucosa (stomach lining) to secrete the digestive juices needed to digest food properly.

* Bitters strengthen poor digestion, which in turn helps the body better assimilate vitamins and minerals.

* Bitters help the body to assimilate fats by stimulating a release of bile into the intestines.

* Bitters stimulate the activity of the liver, which is a very important organ for detoxifying and filtering harmful substances from the body.

* Bitters regulate the secretion of insulin and glycogen by the pancreas, and therefore can be helpful in managing hypoglycemia and diabetes.

* Bitters stimulate repair of the stomach lining so can be useful in reversing ulcers.

An ancient herbalist named Paracelsus created a bitters formula that was later patented by a Swedish scientist, known today as Swedish Bitters. This is a very popular remedy, particularly in Europe, and there are many amazing testimonies to its contributions to healing all kinds of ailments.
